Material Comparison: HNBR vs. Others


 

HNBR vs NBR (Standard Nitrile):

While NBR is suitable for basic oil-resistant applications at low temperatures, it degrades quickly when exposed to ozone or temperatures above 100 degrees Celsius. HNBR provides a much wider temperature range and vastly superior resistance to weathering and modern oilfield chemicals that would cause NBR to harden and crack.

 

HNBR vs FKM (Fluoroelastomer):

FKM is often cited for its extreme heat and chemical resistance. However, HNBR is generally tougher in terms of physical properties. HNBR offers better abrasion resistance and higher tensile strength, making it more durable in dynamic applications where the seal moves against a metal surface. Question: Is HSN the same as HNBR?
Answer: Yes, HSN (Highly Saturated Nitrile) and HNBR (Hydrogenated Nitrile Butadiene Rubber) are different names for the same chemical elastomer. Both terms are used interchangeably in the oil and gas industry.
